8 Days Machame Route

8 Days Machame Route — The Legendary Whiskey Route

The Machame Route is Kilimanjaro's most popular trekking trail — and for good reason. Known as the "Whiskey Route" (in contrast to Marangu's "Coca-Cola Route"), it offers dramatic southern slopes, varied terrain from rainforest to alpine desert, and the famous climb-high-sleep-low acclimatization that gives trekkers the best possible summit chance.

This 8-day itinerary adds an extra acclimatization day at Barranco Camp, transforming the standard 7-day Machame schedule into one of the most reliable summit routes on the mountain. You'll traverse the Shira Plateau, climb to Lava Tower at 4,630 metres before descending to sleep, scale the Barranco Wall and make your midnight bid for Uhuru Peak.

Baobab Safari Adventure runs fully supported Machame expeditions with certified guides, a complete porter team, quality mountain tents and all park fees included. Whether this is your first high-altitude trek or your fifth summit attempt, the Whiskey Route delivers an unforgettable Kilimanjaro experience.

Who Is This Trek For?

The Machame Route suits a wide range of trekkers — from first-timers with good fitness to experienced hikers seeking Kilimanjaro's classic experience. The 8-day schedule keeps daily distances reasonable and builds in proper acclimatization, making it far more achievable than compressed 6-day versions offered by some operators.

You don't need technical climbing skills or prior altitude experience, though some multi-day hiking background helps. What matters most is cardiovascular fitness, mental determination and willingness to walk slowly. Our guides monitor your health at every camp and will advise honestly if the summit push should be adjusted for safety.

Your 8-Day Machame Trek

Drive from Moshi to Machame Gate (1,790 m) on Kilimanjaro's southwestern flank. After registration and meeting your mountain crew, enter the lush montane rainforest — a green cathedral of ancient trees, ferns and birdlife.

The trail climbs steadily through the forest on a well-maintained path. Machame Camp sits on a clearing at the forest edge with your first views of Kibo's summit cone through the trees. A solid first day that sets the pace for the adventure ahead.

Leave the rainforest and enter the moorland zone. The vegetation changes dramatically — giant heather, lobelias and groundsels dot the landscape as you climb onto the Shira Plateau's western edge.

Shira Camp offers spectacular views across the plateau toward Kibo and the jagged peaks of Shira Cathedral. The afternoon is free to explore the surrounding moorland and acclimatize at your new altitude.

The classic Machame acclimatization day. Trek east across the Shira Plateau, then climb steeply to Lava Tower at 4,630 metres for lunch in the thin air. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy is the secret to Machame's strong summit success rates.

After lunch, descend through the alpine desert to Barranco Camp — a stunning location beneath the Breach Wall and the Western Breach. The dramatic cliff faces surrounding camp make this one of the most photogenic campsites on the mountain.

This extra day is what separates our 8-day Machame itinerary from standard 7-day schedules — and it significantly improves your summit chances. Your body continues adapting to altitude while you rest tired legs from the first three days.

An optional acclimatization hike up the Barranco Wall and along the plateau ridge provides further altitude exposure without overexertion. Alternatively, relax at camp, photograph the surrounding cliffs and glaciers, and prepare mentally for the days ahead.

Conquer the Barranco Wall — the famous 257-metre rock scramble that every Machame trekker remembers. Your guide will show you the best handholds and footholds; what looks impossible from below is entirely walkable with care and patience.

Continue across rolling alpine terrain with views of the southern glaciers to Karanga Camp in the valley below. A shorter day that maintains altitude acclimatization while conserving energy for the summit push.

Leave the Karanga Valley and climb into the alpine desert zone toward Barafu Base Camp. The landscape becomes increasingly stark — volcanic scree, ice fields above and an endless sky. You are now in the summit zone.

Arrive at Barafu by early afternoon. Eat an early dinner, organize your summit pack with warm layers, headtorch and water, and try to rest. Your guide wakes you around 11 pm for the final briefing before the midnight ascent.

Begin the summit attempt around midnight. Climb by headtorch through frozen scree on switchbacks that seem endless in the dark. Reach Stella Point (5,739 m) on the crater rim as the sky turns gold and pink with dawn.

Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak — 5,895 metres, the roof of Africa. Stand at the summit sign, take photos and absorb a moment you'll carry forever. Descend to Barafu for rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp in the cloud forest zone.

A gentle final descent through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. The air feels thick and warm after a week in the thin atmosphere — a welcome return to the living world of birds, butterflies and green canopy.

Collect your Kilimanjaro summit certificate, thank your mountain crew and transfer to Moshi for a hot shower and celebration. You've conquered the Whiskey Route — Kilimanjaro's greatest trail.
