6 Days Rongai Route

6 Days Rongai Route — Kilimanjaro Northern Approach

The Rongai Route is Kilimanjaro's only trail that approaches the mountain from the north, near the Kenyan border. Often called the "Loitokitok Route," it is one of the quietest paths on the mountain — drier than the southern routes, with fewer trekkers and a gentler gradient that rewards steady, patient climbing.

This 6-day itinerary adds a crucial acclimatization day at Mawenzi Tarn, giving your body extra time to adapt before the summit push. You ascend through pine forest and open moorland, camp beneath the dramatic spires of Mawenzi, cross the lunar saddle to Kibo Hut, and make your midnight bid for Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres — the roof of Africa.

Descent is via the Marangu Route on the southern side, so you experience two completely different faces of Kilimanjaro in a single expedition. Baobab Safari Adventure provides certified guides, a full porter crew, quality camping equipment and all park fees — you bring the determination; we handle everything else.

What Makes the Rongai Route Special

  • Kilimanjaro's only northern approach trail
  • Quiet, uncrowded path with wild moorland scenery
  • Extra acclimatization day at Mawenzi Tarn (4,330 m)
  • Stunning views of Mawenzi's jagged volcanic peaks
  • Drier climate — ideal during rainy season months
  • Wildlife sightings on lower slopes (buffalo, antelope)
  • Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo cones
  • Summit Uhuru Peak at sunrise — 5,895 m
  • Descent via Marangu Route — two routes in one trek
  • Camping under the stars with full mountain crew support

Who Is This Trek For?

The 6-day Rongai Route suits trekkers who want a quieter Kilimanjaro experience without sacrificing summit success. The northern side receives less rainfall than Marangu, Machame or Lemosho, making it an excellent choice during the long rains (April–May) when southern trails are wetter.

The extra day at altitude significantly improves acclimatization compared to shorter itineraries. Previous hiking experience is helpful but not essential — what matters most is fitness, a positive attitude and willingness to walk at a slow, steady "pole pole" pace. No technical climbing skills are required; this is a trekking route, not a mountaineering expedition.

Your 6-Day Rongai Trek

After a scenic drive from Moshi to Rongai Gate near the Kenyan border, complete park registration and meet your mountain crew. The trail begins through cultivated farmland and pine forest, gradually climbing into montane forest where colobus monkeys and colourful turacos are often spotted.

The path is gentle and well-defined — a perfect warm-up day. Arrive at Simba Camp in the late afternoon with your first views of Kilimanjaro's northern slopes. Dinner is served in the mess tent, followed by a briefing from your lead guide on what to expect tomorrow.

Today's trek is the longest hiking day on the ascent. Leave the forest behind and enter the moorland zone — a landscape of giant heather, lobelias and open grassland with ever-expanding views. The trail undulates through rolling hills, crossing several ridges before reaching Kikelewa Cave.

Despite the distance, the gradient is manageable and your guide will set a comfortable pace. At camp, take time to hydrate well and enjoy the sweeping panoramas back toward Kenya. The air is noticeably thinner — listen to your body and rest early.

This is your dedicated acclimatization day — and the reason the 6-day itinerary has a significantly higher summit success rate than shorter routes. A shorter hike allows your body to adjust to the altitude while you explore the spectacular surroundings.

Camp is set beside a small tarn (alpine lake) at the foot of Mawenzi, Kilimanjaro's second volcanic cone. The jagged peaks of Mawenzi tower above camp — one of the most dramatic backdrops on the entire mountain. An optional acclimatization walk in the afternoon further aids adaptation before tomorrow's crossing of the saddle.

Cross the high alpine desert of the saddle — a vast, windswept plateau between Mawenzi and Kibo that feels like walking on another planet. Vegetation disappears entirely; only volcanic rock, scree and endless sky remain.

Arrive at Kibo Hut in the early afternoon. This is base camp for the summit attempt. You'll receive an early dinner around 5 pm, then try to rest — though excitement and altitude make sleep difficult. Your guide will wake you around 11 pm for a hot drink before the midnight summit push begins.

The summit attempt begins around midnight. Climbing by headtorch through frozen scree, you ascend the steep switchbacks of Hans Meyer Cave and Gilman's Point (5,681 m) on the crater rim. If energy and conditions allow, continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak — the highest point in Africa at 5,895 metres.

Watch the sun rise over the African continent from the roof of the world — an unforgettable moment that makes every step worthwhile. After photos and celebration, descend back to Kibo Hut for a rest and lunch, then continue down across the saddle and down to Horombo Hut on the Marangu Route. It is a long, demanding day, but the joy of summiting carries you through.

A well-earned descent through moorland and lush montane rainforest back to Marangu Gate. With every step the air grows richer and your legs feel stronger — the mountain gives back what it took on summit night.

At the gate, receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate and congratulate your crew. Transfer to your hotel in Moshi for a hot shower and celebration dinner, or continue to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight. You have climbed Kilimanjaro from the north and descended through the south — a complete traverse of Africa's greatest mountain.
