8 Days Lemosho Route

8 Days Lemosho Route — Kilimanjaro's Most Scenic Trail

The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as Kilimanjaro's most beautiful trek. Approaching from the remote western side, it begins in pristine rainforest rarely visited by other groups, crosses the vast Shira Plateau with its otherworldly volcanic landscapes, and joins the southern circuit at the Barranco Wall for a spectacular summit bid.

This 8-day itinerary is designed for maximum acclimatization — the longest and gentlest altitude profile of any Kilimanjaro route. By the time you reach Barafu Base Camp, your body has had eight days to adapt, giving Lemosho one of the highest summit success rates on the mountain, typically above 90%.

Baobab Safari Adventure's Lemosho expeditions are fully supported camping treks with certified guides, a complete porter crew, quality mountain tents and all park fees included. If you want the best chance of reaching Uhuru Peak combined with the finest scenery Kilimanjaro has to offer, Lemosho is the route to choose.

Who Is This Trek For?

The Lemosho Route suits trekkers of all experience levels who prioritize scenery and summit success over speed. The 8-day schedule means daily hiking distances are manageable, altitude is gained gradually and there is time to appreciate the extraordinary landscapes you'll pass through.

First-time trekkers with reasonable fitness will thrive on Lemosho, as will experienced hikers who want a more immersive, less rushed Kilimanjaro experience. No technical climbing is required — just steady walking, good hydration and trust in the "pole pole" (slowly, slowly) philosophy that Tanzanian guides live by.

Your 8-Day Lemosho Trek

Drive from Moshi through farmland to Londorossi Gate on Kilimanjaro's western side. After registration, enter a pristine montane rainforest that feels untouched — giant trees draped in moss, colobus monkeys overhead and the distant call of turacos.

The trail is gentle today, a perfect introduction to the mountain. Camp is set at Mti Mkubwa ("Big Tree") beneath towering forest canopy. Enjoy your first mountain dinner as your crew introduces themselves and your lead guide outlines the journey ahead.

Climb steadily out of the rainforest into the moorland zone. The vegetation changes dramatically — giant groundsels and lobelias appear as you gain altitude and the forest falls away behind you.

Emerge onto the western edge of the Shira Plateau with sweeping views across the caldera floor toward Kibo and Shira peaks. Camp at Shira 1 with a spectacular sunset over the plateau — one of the finest camp views on any Kilimanjaro route.

A beautiful, relatively flat day crossing the Shira Plateau — a vast volcanic caldera formed by an ancient eruption. The walking is easy but the scenery is extraordinary: volcanic cones, lava ridges and unobstructed views in every direction.

This gentle acclimatization day allows your body to adapt while you explore one of Kilimanjaro's most unique landscapes. Shira 2 Camp sits in the heart of the plateau with Kibo's summit cone dominating the eastern horizon.

Today's "climb high, sleep low" strategy is key to Lemosho's excellent acclimatization. Ascend to Lava Tower at 4,630 metres — well above your sleeping altitude — for lunch in the thin air, then descend to Barranco Camp in the afternoon.

This counterintuitive pattern of climbing high and sleeping lower stimulates your body to produce more red blood cells, dramatically improving summit readiness. Barranco Camp sits beneath the dramatic Breach Wall and the Western Breach — a stunning amphitheatre of cliffs.

Scale the Barranco Wall — a 257-metre rock face that looks daunting from camp but is entirely achievable with your guide's assistance. The scramble is one of Kilimanjaro's most memorable moments and a favourite among photographers.

Continue across rolling alpine terrain to Karanga Camp in the Karanga Valley. The short day allows further acclimatization at altitude before the push to Base Camp. Rest, hydrate and enjoy the views of the southern glaciers.

A shorter hiking day brings you to Barafu Base Camp in the alpine desert zone. The landscape is stark and beautiful — volcanic scree, ice fields visible above and nothing but sky in every direction.

Arrive by early afternoon, eat an early dinner and try to rest. Your guide will wake you around 11 pm for the summit attempt. Check your headtorch, pack warm layers and prepare mentally for the most demanding night of the trek.

The summit push begins at midnight. Climb by headtorch through frozen scree toward Stella Point (5,739 m) on the crater rim. As dawn breaks, continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak — 5,895 metres, the highest point on the African continent.

Celebrate at the summit sign with photos and tears of joy as the sun illuminates the glaciers and plains thousands of metres below. Descend to Barafu for a rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp in the cloud forest — a very long but triumphant day.

A gentle final descent through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. After eight days on the mountain, the rich air and green canopy feel almost overwhelming — a welcome return to the world below.

Receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate, thank your mountain crew and transfer to Moshi for a hot shower, celebratory dinner and well-earned rest. You have completed one of the world's great trekking adventures.
